Boston Mayor Mayor Wu Responds to President Trump's Warning to Move FIFA World Cup Matches from Boston

The mayor of Boston, Mayor Wu, indicated that the municipality was prepared for a confrontation with US President Donald Trump concerning his claim that he could instruct FIFA to remove World Cup matches from Gillette Stadium, situated approximately 35 kilometers southwest of the city.

Wu spoke on a local podcast recently to respond to comments from the Trump administration, which had labeled her as "far-left." Trump had warned that he would contact FIFA President Gianni Infantino if Boston did not "clean up its act."

Much of it is secured by agreement so that no one, even if they live in the White House, can change it.

Wu added, "We live in a time where for attention, for power, for pushing the boundaries ... repeated warnings ... are issued at people and cities who refuse to back down and comply or be obedient to a hateful agenda."

Mayor Wu further stated, "We will keep being who we are, and that means, unfortunately, we are going to be part of a discussion that is challenging Boston's values." Wu finished by stressing her commitment for the city, saying, "Ten toes down for Boston."

The President's Statements and FIFA Role

Recently, FIFA President Gianni Infantino was photographed with President Trump at the international summit in Sharm el-Sheikh. Infantino has also visited the White House and given World Cup tournament and Club World Cup trophies to the president as gifts.

On Tuesday, President Trump was asked about recent disturbances in South Boston that involved a police vehicle being set on fire. Trump responded, "If things aren't handled well, and if I feel there's unsafe conditions, I would call Gianni – the president of FIFA, who's great."

He continued, "I would say: 'Let's move into another location' and they would comply. He wouldn't love to do it. But he would do it very easily." Trump also specifically targeted Wu, stating, "Boston's mayor is not good ... she's far-left, and they're dominating some areas in Boston. That's a pretty big statement, right?"

Previous Warnings and 2026 World Cup Information

President Trump has made previous comments that he would take the similar discussion with Infantino about moving games from other host cities, which are among the 16 locations across the continent.

The United States is co-hosting the 2026 tournament with Mexico and Canada. The expanded tournament is scheduled to be held from 11 June to 19 July next summer.
