Space Traveler Shares Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also featured high-profile passengers.
The mission was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, recalling a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.
She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to female health science and operated research during the mission, said everything she had worked for – from her lab work and years of training to the historic significance of her roots – was overshadowed under the avalanche of gendered attacks.
She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after an attack during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
A Path to Recovery
In the time since fulfilling her dream, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the supporters whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she said.
She concluded that despite the negativity, important benefits had resulted from the flight, including increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
The diverse crew also included experts in multiple disciplines.
The venture behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company established by a well-known tech mogul.
