Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes against Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, after Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need four wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
